Surveying the scene in front of me, I didn’t know if I would survive the night. While they were still conscious, I was not able to raise any reasonable response from my two friends, and their shaking had long since stopped. I knew not to be reassured about this, however, as we’d all learned at school that once the shivering stops, the more serious stages of hypothermia have only begun.
Today began with the promise of a brilliant adventure. Alex, Max and I were heading up to TC, for the first time on our own. My newly-minted drivers’ license was gleaming proudly on the dashboard, an icon for our new-found freedom. The regret I now feel at succumbing to Max’s demand that we pass that family wagon in near-zero visibility can not be over stated.
I pushed those thoughts out of my mind as I continued to work on the rear door of my car, I just had to get it open if we were to have any chance of survival – but our chances were looking slimmer and slimmer as the temperature dropped and the light failed.
